Location & Things to Do
Red Dog Retreat is close to Yellowstone, Henry's Lake, Mesa Falls, Big Springs, Sawtelle Peak, Harriman State Park, and world-class fly fishing on the Henry's Fork of the Snake River and the Madison River — plus hiking, snowmobiling, floating, horseback riding, golf, dining, and local shops. It's also a favorite base camp for guests splitting their trip between Yellowstone and Grand Teton.
Winter guests take note: Big Sky Resort and Grand Targhee Resort are each about 1.5 hours away, making Red Dog Retreat a workable home base for a ski trip as well as a snowmobile or Yellowstone winter getaway.
Guest Access
Guests have a private entrance and full use of the garage — handy for keeping snowmobiles, fishing gear, bikes, or a vehicle out of the weather. This home is open year-round and sits in a central location for the area's best adventures. You're minutes from Henry's Lake State Park's public boat launch (with excellent ice fishing in winter), and a short drive south on Highway 20 puts you at Mesa Falls, the Johnny Sack Cabin at Big Springs, and Sawtelle Peak. Catch a show at the Playmill Theatre, tee off or play some pickleball at Island Park Village Resort (just a short walk away), or spend a few hours exploring Harriman State Park's trails and historic ranch grounds. In winter, this is snowmobiler's country — over 500 miles of trail riding accessible right from the driveway, from easy groomed trails to steep backcountry climbs and soft powder for the more adventurous.
Winter Access
Island Park receives significant snow. During snowy conditions, 4-wheel drive, snow tires, and high ground clearance are required. The main driveway is plowed and walkways are cleared, but additional snow may fall during your stay — snow shovels are provided at the front door, back door, and garage. Trailer parking is available nearby, less than 3/4 mile from the home, just off Highway 20. Please check winter parking availability before arrival.
Wi-Fi & Cell Service
Wi-Fi is provided via a dedicated 1Gb fiber connection — fast and reliable for streaming, video calls, and remote work. Cell service in the area is generally strong.
Wildlife & Mountain Setting
Red Dog Retreat backs directly onto US Forest Service land, offering a natural buffer, immediate access to forest trails, and the kind of quiet you can't manufacture. This is a peaceful mountain retreat surrounded by native wildlife — guests regularly spot moose, elk, deer, fox, and a wide variety of birds right from the property, and you may hear the calls of a resident bald eagle and her chicks from the adjacent aspen grove.
Because this is a true mountain setting, insects, spiders, and wildlife are part of the natural environment. Please keep doors closed and do not approach or feed wildlife.
Supplies Provided
A starter supply of coffee, paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and dish soap is provided. Guests may need to purchase additional supplies depending on length of stay and personal use. A small local grocery store is less than a mile away.
